2016-04-29 (F) Weekly Summary

Recording space is important. If it’s a little uncomfortable that’s probably all right but when it is so bad that recording becomes undesirable then something needs to change. Anyone who follows the day-to-day blogs could tell that a change was necessary and inevitable.

I think there are two kinds of people when it comes to inconvenient situations. There are those who complain about a situation and those who do something. Maybe the fix is to alter a procedure. If your shoe squeaks when you tap the toe you might roll your foot differently while you walk. Another person might cut/glue the shoe to stop the squeak. Those are the people I hope are reading my blog. The people who just buy another pair of shoes or whine about their broken shoes probably don’t bother coming here.

Recording on chapter eight took two days to finish. This could have been done in a single session but it was too easy to break and too hard to resume recording.

Chapter nine recording was started but the cramped closet finally got the best of me. I spent a day at the hack space cutting and drilling a custom shelf for the closet. It only had to be large enough to fit a computer, mouse and keyboard. Inexpensive shelving planks were purchased because I needed several other shelves for my place. This custom shelf had to span the entire length of the closet but not block all of it. The basic idea was a shelf on a couple risers, one of the risers was narrow and could reach the far side of the closet.

The closet was put back together and looked great, it was easy to get into and out of, there was room to crouch and drop things. A light was added and I realized that should have been done days ago because it added so much comfort to the room. This time gamble should pay off quickly.

A day was spent listening to the audio continuously. This listening was done without distraction while on a walk, a nice way to listen to an audiobook. There were some corrections to be made, which are being kept on a list, but what struck me was that I enjoyed the story. I obviously knew it by heart but listening to it in a single sitting was very enjoyable and I was glad that I spent 60+ minutes listening without distraction.

There was no trouble finishing chapter nine. The upgrades to the recording space and renewed enthusiasm for the story made recording fun and exciting again. Chapter nine took only one day to record, which isn’t a feat but will hopefully be the start of a trend.

Audio recording finally resumed. After taking days off to revamp the recording space and review the existing audio it was finally time to record again. Chapter nine was finished quickly despite being tired, almost exhausted, when starting. Previous recording sessions have been cut short due to tiredness. While tired it was easy to slur words together and difficult to concentrate on a sentence while keeping all the other factors of recording in mind. Without the added distraction of a cumbersome recording area it was possible to finish a chapter without significant problems.

The new recording space was roughly the size of a telephone booth, which is a reference some young people won’t appreciate. Heat buildup in the space was a problem but it was easy to vent by opening the door briefly. When the door was open a sleeping bag still hung over the opening so the sleeping bag had to be moved while the door was held open. It may be smart to replace the draping sleep bag with more egg crate foam and attach it to the door. The sleeping bag was held in place with a wooden dowel previously used as a hanging rack for clothes in the closet.

All the part one audio was reviewed. The quality seemed to improve after initial problems were fixed. The sound quality was acceptable for now. Other things recognizable were the flat tone of voice and unnatural intonations. These problems did improve as the recording progressed and will hopefully continue to improve. Listening to over an hour of recorded audio without interruption helped to see some of the persistent problems so they can hopefully be improved.

Since the story was always read in small portions before, and of course written in small chunks, the full impact of the story was never apparent to me. Listening to the first chapters all at once had a much better effect, even through the less-than-perfect recording.

2016-04-26 (Tu) Charged: DesertIrish

Discomfort in the recording space was becoming problematic. Recording sessions were short, tiresome and easily distracted for any reason to leave the space. Designs for a shelf had been developing for several days, mostly while inside the space. Other shelves were needed for the new place so a day would be needed to cut all the necessary shelves for the apartment and one specialized for the recording space.

Earlier the plan was to purchase 1x12 lumber, cut it to length, paint it and wait for it to dry before installing it. In order to start recording immediately a second custom shelf was going to be purchased and left unpainted so it could be used immediately while the other dried. My girlfriend however made the suggestion to simply buy shelving planks which came with Formica or faux wood covering and didn’t need paint. I listened to her.

Enough shelving planks were purchased for the whole apartment and one thicker piece which would become the custom shelf in the recording space. Scrap lumber was found at the hack space which would act as a long brace which would have to span the length of the closet and a second piece to elevate the rest of the computer shelf.

Shelf pieces

The wood was cut to length and assembled in the dimensions of the closet. The whole unit was assembled upside-down so screws could go from the bottom and remain unseen while the shelf was being used. Unfortunately the long brace was installed on the wrong side. If the shelf were to be installed this way the brace would block the door or the shelf would be on the wrong side of the recording space.

  Upside-down and assembled incorrectly

Corrections were made so the shelf would sit in the recording space properly. Wood on the back of the shelf, which was meant to elevate it, was trimmed at one corner to make room for the brace. A miter hand saw was used rather than a power tool which would have taken more time to set up than a hand saw.

Bottom of assembled shelf

The shelf was installed in the recording space. Dimensions were tight and it took almost five minutes to get the shelf installed properly but it felt very secure instead of wobbly. Height of the shelf was determined by existing shelf brackets and one was a suitable height for a standing desk.

Shelf installed in recording space

Computer equipment and recording equipment was put back in the closet. The computer screen didn’t fit on the shelf but tension between the padded walls was enough to suspend it over the desk without any other support. In the picture below there was no stand on the computer monitor since it was removed for this setup. An LED light, previously used on for the Acetone Vapor Bath Experiment, was added to the space. LED lighting shouldn’t add excessive heat, which is why it was used in the acetone experiment, and shouldn’t add any noise to the recording unlike fluorescent which was known for adding a buzz.

Chapter nine was started in the cramped closet. Time spent there has become increasingly difficult to tolerate. Even entering and exiting has been difficult since the space between the door frame and computer rack was barely enough to pass through. This could also tip the computer over.

Chapters have been getting broken up as it seems logical while reading. Sometimes a chapter break is clear, like when the characters leave an area. Sometimes a chapter runs long and it just makes sense to break the chapter when a conversation changes. Chapter nine will take place at a restaurant and end when the character leave.

Chapter eight recording was finished. Recording hasn’t held any new surprises lately but the location, the tiny sound closet, is so cramped that it has become difficult to want to spend time recording. A custom shelf has been getting designed mentally which would allow for significantly more leg room. Currently there is not enough room to crouch since the shelf holding the computer takes up so much room. The shelf would be suspended by wall studs already in place.

If a day was used to build a shelf it may speed up recording in the long term. Shelving would be cut and nailed together then painted and allowed to dry. Since the closet is enclosed the paint odor would be distracting. It might make the most sense to build two identical shelves at the same time and only paint one. While it dries, for a couple days, the unpainted version could be used.

Recording for chapter eight was started. Recording has been easier since a rhythm has been established with the equipment. Most of the finicky tricks with the equipment have been solved once so when problems come up, even multiple problems, they can be solved quickly. Upgrading computer equipment has not been tried again but may be considered if a second pass at the whole book is taken.

Sound isolation in the new room has been great. Unfortunately it is very uncomfortable due to the cramped space and heavily insulated walls. There is so little room that if I drop something I have to open the door or twist my body in order to crouch low enough to pick it up. A different desk, or shelf could help and a day may be spent to build one.

2016-04-22 (F) Weekly Summary

Recording moved along this week. It started well by wrapping up the first part. The first part was five chapters long and was relatively self-contained. This is also known as the Zombie Story. These five chapters introduce the Charged world, although the word Charged hasn’t been used and that was intentional. The Zombie Story takes place before anyone has been publically revealed as having super powers and introduces the Ide family. This family share an unusual secret , firstly, they have super abilities and secondly, they inherited their powers from their mother. Inherited powers aren’t as common as people given them in a seemingly random lottery.

A friend of mine, Sarah White, has been putting ideas together for illustrating the Zombie Story so I wanted to edit the story which I’ve mentioned was the reason I started reading it. Only the first part of the story was supposed to get the audiobook treatment but it has become an enjoyable part of this project and the text has improved with the editing. Editing and recording continued with chapter six, which took place four years after the Zombie Story. It was still about the Ide family and Dawson, the oldest son, was still the protagonist. Recording equipment has been accumulating and it was supposed to be implemented after Chapter 05 but recording just continued with the equipment.

A whole day was spent creating a new recording space in a closet instead of the free-standing fort around the computer. The space had egg crate foam, also called convoluted foam, on three of the walls at head level. This uneven surface does a good job of dampening sound since sound reflects well off smooth surfaces, like hardwood floors and bare walls.

Recording space

With the upgraded recording area it seemed like a good time to implement the new recording equipment. This turned out to be a disaster because the Windows-based PC wouldn’t repeat audio back to the headphones quickly which created a delay. This delay was very distracting since I was supposed to be concentrating on my voice to make sure I sounded reasonable. Fortunately it was possible to continue using the Mac with Garageband. This software has been easy to use so far.

Nice looking but not useful for recording

Chapter seven recording was the first chapter to be recorded in the new space and it was uncomfortable. Uncomfortable is a soft word. Getting into the space was difficult since I had to duck under a hanging sleeping bag then stand behind a plastic bin on the floor which had a small cart on top to hold the computer. I could not stand close to the computer so typing was difficult. I couldn’t even bend down because the cart was in the way so when I dropped something it was a procedure to pick it up. Lighting in the closet was provided by a magnetic LED puck which was enough to see the keyboard but did not promote a healthy work space. This will need some upgrading. The sound dampening of the room has ultimately been valuable enough to justify the change but there is room for improvement.
