The hinge was redrilled to handle #4 bolts and countersunk deeper to make room. #4-40 brass countersunk bolts were purchased from a hardware store and installed. The hinge was repeatedly countersunk deeper until the hinge could close with each side parallel and the faux pocket watches formed a clamshell.
