2016-05-20 (F) Weekly Summary

A minimum of one chapter per day has been recorded. At this point in the text, chapter breaks were included. When they were written the chapters were short and often followed the end of a scene or change of location. Sometime this simply wasn’t long enough to justify a chapter so chapters have been combined. On Thursday two short chapters were recorded since the break made sense.

I haven’t kept a traffic monitor on the audio files to see if anyone is downloading. Part of me is worried that people don’t care about this story and part of me doesn’t really care because I’m having fun recording it. In fact, I still have plans to RErecord the whole thing. Hopefully that will be done over a weekend so it doesn’t take too much time away from the regular flow of this blog. That’s a problem for Future-Me, not Today-Me.

Since twenty nine chapters have been recorded I have expanded my experience with voice acting. I’ve gone from zero to novice. When I listen to audio books I hear so many things I like and I want to make my own recording that good. Other actors contort their voices to sound different for each character and I try but I’ve actually been rewriting the book so it becomes more obvious who is speaking. This helped the audio book and I think it helps to literary book too. A couple times I have caught myself reading lines in the wrong voice because I wasn’t clear who was supposed to be speaking…AND I WROTE IT. That tells me there’s a problem so it was clarified. On Monday I reviewed the first part with my girlfriend and I heard many more things that I didn’t like. I’m glad my experience has shown me some things that I know I can improve.

Last Saturday I gave some tips for recording in a make-shift recording space and I’d like to share the most important one in case you didn’t read the full article. Don’t fart in the recording space, it’s a small sealed room and you’ll regret it. That is all.

The shear length of this story has made me reconsider how to classify it. When I started it was my goal to write a novel. I even started it during November for NaNoWriMo, National Novel Writing Month. I think the usual problem with people who start a novel is that they give up before reaching the 50 000 words necessary to be considered a novel or they cannot fill that many pages. I had the opposite problem, this story has gone over 170 000 words. At this point I think it’s better to simply call this a serial story. Whatever it’s called, I don’t want to stop telling it.

Here’s a cute fact I didn’t share before, the characters who fought Liz’s zombies in the first part of the book were a roleplay group in a campaign I created to play in this world. Their actions and mannerisms were all copied from the characters they played. Only Beth and Joules were NPCs. This is hardly a new technique but I had a lot of fun writing them into a story and it made for a cast with widely different personalities.
