A helpful hacker saw my project and asked about the LEDs going into the project. It was a cluster of seven from an Adafruit Jewel but he happened to have some single 8mm addressable LEDs, one of which even had Dupont wires soldered to it so there was no more need to solder anything. This was a temporary solution until I can get my stock of addressable LEDs at home.

Previously, the onboard LED would flash to indicate the mode of the keyboard, but that used the delay() function which halted all other processes on the keyboard. By removing that, and using only the color changing LED, modes could be switched instantly and typing could continue immediately. After the pictures were taken, the brightness of the LED was reduced.
