Having a heart rate sensor on the front of the board would look clean, but there would be value to tethering the sensor. Landline phones used four-conductor coiled cords, and eBay has them for approximately $1USD each. I cut the end off a cable and soldered the wires to a sensor to make sure it would work as a remote.

The remote sensor did not work, and I couldn't figure out the problem. I added header pins to a second module and plugged it into the board where the old sensor sat. This module worked without a problem. I was able to get feedback, and a red light inside the sensor was visible while it was running.

I was not sure if I damaged the first module or if the long cable was the problem. I soldered up a couple of adapters so I could connect the unmodified phone cord between the controller and sensor. This time, I had no issues and a sensor I could move around at will. The problem must have been the first sensor.
