The face on this motor had a special lip, probably for the purpose of mating it to a receptacle made for this motor. It appeared to be cast aluminum (aluminium) with machined sides. Creating a custom mount for this motor would be more time consuming than I’d prefer so it seemed logical to take the same approach as the small motors and tap holes into the face of the motor. The same tap, #6, was selected.

Mending straps, drill bits, and a tap

Long straight mending straps were purchased which could span over the edges of the motor face and still have a mounting hole on the motor face. Longer ones would have been purchased but the ones pictured seemed to work well and were available at a nearby hardware store. A hole was drilled in the center of each brace with a drill bit larger than a #6 bolt.

Hole locations were marked on the face of the motor. These holes were approximately in the center of the motor face recessed portions. Since the holes were going to be tapped, they didn’t need to fit nuts. The drill bit was one which came with the tap to ensure the correct size was used.

A drill pressed was used to make holes perpendicular to the motor face. The motor was resting on a piece of scrap wood which had been drilled so that the motor could rest naturally and vertically without tipping. The bottom of the motor was not flat, it had bearings and fixture bolts so the custom rest was important for making perpendicular holes.

The holes were well-centered in the recessed portions of the motor face plate. Keeping these holes centered and directly across the face from one another was a matter of taste and workmanship rather than performance. Hopefully, the bracing and similar parts will not even be very visible while in operation.
