Simple infrared remote controls have begun to accumulate on the desk for this project. In the last laser tag attempt, three years ago, simple remotes like these were used as moderator tools to assign teams and start the games. They were cheap and easy to purchase so duplicates could be given to each moderator in case an unruly gamer needed a sudden "kill" signal to knock them out of the game.

The remote on the right with only ON and OFF buttons came from a remote-controlled relay kit. This was going to serve as target practice. The remote on the left has been used for a few days as the moderator remote but all that has happened is mapping out the specific signals so the Arduino could respond accordingly. Right now, the Arduino will print a firmware version notice and how many milliseconds have passed since it was synchronized. Holding any button will synchronize it.

Of course, the first thing was to point the new remote at the receiver and see what kind of signal it emitted. Surprisingly, the ON button send the same signal as the OK button on the first remote and the OFF button used the same signal as the number 2. I noticed that the buttons were in roughly the same location so I peeled the adhesive layer back. Every segment had pads for a button but only two were used. This meant that the boards inside these remotes was identical and manufacturers only had to print a new cover with domed buttons and conductive pads. A metal contact was placed over some of the other button pads and they all worked.

So, that super-cheap remote has as much power as the more elaborate ones. It also means that dozens of the remote could be ordered and a printed layer could be put over it with custom button names and it would work even if the remotes were for different kits.
