2023-08-11 (F) Weekly Summary

I made a version of my spinner where the pins were part of it. I lathed custom aluminum rods with a rotary tool to shape the pins, and sandpaper discs to smooth them. I put a magnet on one of the pins and tested it between two brass pyramids.

I made brass cones from conical nail heads using a rotary tool and a laser-cut holder. I designed a frame with double-sided tape acting as springs and the cones holding the aluminum shaft and magnet. After a few iterations, I made one that spun freely without wobbling.
The smallest wobble-free compass yet

I liked the design, so I designed parts to fit the compass into a plastic jar for demonstrations. The enclosure made it easy to carry, and I have kept it in my pocket since building. Through all the bouncing, it has not started to wobble.

I experimented with creating a spring-loaded axle using pogo pins and a drilling jig. I had some success making a hollow M2.5 bolt, but it requires a proper lathe for higher success rates. The spring-loaded top should provide the necessary tension, and the bolt should provide the appropriate diameter.

I sharpened the pogo pin bolts to create a compass spinner and used a drill and scalpel to put divots in the ends of a couple of nylon bolts. I drafted and cut a frame with brass rods for the vertical supports and pointed the bolts inwards to hold the spinner. The magnet spun freely when the bolt was loose, but when I compressed the spring, it would not rotate. The springs may be too strong.
Spring-loaded compasses

I made new aluminum shafts but struggled to make them uniformly. I created three 10mm units, but they were not identical. I designed a simple frame with four interlocking pieces. The vertical supports faced each other in one design, and the pieces faced the same way in the other. Both designs were minimal and sturdy. I used M2.5 bolts with divots to allow the compass spinner to move freely.
