A rhythm of silently editing a chapter then reading it out loud has been useful. Naturally, as soon as I established it, I started to mess with it. Instead of doing one chapter at a time, I would silently edit two chapters, then read them aloud. Giving myself a little time between edits worked very well. It gave the words and ideas time to settle so when I read them out loud, I already knew how I wanted them to sound, and edits were easier than reading aloud right after a silent reading.

This technique was started with chapter 17, which was finished.
