I started working on an emitter array. That device was a sticking point the last time I made a tagger. The version I modeled used Google Cardboard lenses, which were optically clear, readily available in bulk, uniform in size, and dirt cheap. I achieved excellent focus with a rugged unit, and the only extra hardware was an inexpensive LED mount. The threads lost visibility in the animation, but they turned out perfectly when I rendered them for printing.
