I tried cutting enough badges for Grindfest, but I had to keep the laser outdoors because smoke, heat, and humidity bowed the plywood. The warped material caught on the laser guard, so I taped a new piece of wood and removed the guard. The second time, nothing snagged, but the laser stopped midway. I tried again, and it stopped in the same place. I quit for the night.
The second day of engraving went better. I still had to deal with warping plywood and finicky software. I mitigated the failures by switching to a simpler design and cutting the borders twice. I finally have enough for everyone at Grindfest 2025.
There was a blowup around the Granica comic I wrote last year. The publisher decided to refund the backers after we refused to grant them unrestricted liberties to alter the content before publication. We refused, and they sent a refund email that linked to this blog instead of the new publisher where the comic was available.
Sarah, Amanda, and I discussed To Wong Foo, Thanks for everything, Julie Newmar by ourselves after a guest bailed. We all loved the movie and its message, campiness, and how it took issues seriously without being too heavy-handed or too whimsical.
