2025-09-15 (M) Critical Affection: Robocop (1987)

Ben from Biting Comics joined us to talk about his series Shark of War and the 1987 classic Robocop. His series centers on a cyborg shark built to be an undersea soldier, but he cannot be controlled. He highlighted a few more similarities with Robocop, but we were all surprised to discover that Robocop was a surprisingly progressive movie, and despite its themes, it was not adapted from a comic book. We compared and contrasted the movie to others like Judge Dredd for its depiction of police force, and to Porky's for its use of nudity. In both cases, we thought that Robocop did a better job. The movie had the trademark sexism, racism, and elitism of the 80s, but it handled them better than others of that era. Good job, Robocop.
