2025-12-26 (F) Weekly Summary

The old pushbutton mounts were too large for the screen mount to fit on the pipe, but after adjusting the button's nut size to match the button shaft, the footprint shrank. I redesigned the model to be more rugged and thicker, which improved interior wire space, although I regret not positioning the mounting holes closer together.
The new model, on the right, saves internal space and has more clearance for the screen mount

In early October, I discovered some beautiful olive trees near my apartment and decided to soak a few pounds of olives for brining. Last year, I soaked them for two weeks, but this year I extended the soaking to 2.5 months and added baking soda to help leach out the tannins more effectively. After all that waiting, I tasted an olive and found it much better than before. I then transferred the pitted olives into jars, sealing them with a vacuum machine, with some jars containing a lot of salt and one for an attempt at salt curing.
That is a lot of olives and salt

After searching in vain for 12-bit addressable light rings, I found usable components in my old laser tag bins, including enough light rings for all my taggers and pushbuttons from an old arcade controller. I was unable to remove one button and decided to return the expensive new pushbuttons I had ordered.
Usable parts from old projects

I finished wiring the emitter arrays with 12-segment LED rings and infrared LEDs, salvaging old light rings and ensuring proper polarity, and labeling the wires for connection to the prototyping PCB.

I have been developing a board game and asked my wife to help with playtesting and rules editing. We geeked out together on Christmas Eve, playing and I wanted to share that lovely evening with everyone.

Amanda, Sarah, and I discussed The Muppet Christmas Carol, one of Sarah's favorite Christmas movies, which, while not perfect, effectively balanced humor and seriousness and stayed relatively faithful to the original book. Though it could have adhered more closely to Charles Dickens' "A Christmas Carol," it remains one of the best adaptations.
