The rich wood look I wanted required some dark stain. The birch I cut on the laser was sturdy but pale. All my wood stains were in storage or donated, so I walked to the hardware store and bought a stain-and-finish combination. I did a test on the circular control facing where I applied a thick batch of stain, and wiped it away. It looked perfect, so I repeated the process on the pie-shaped octaves. I did not have any kraft paper to protect my impromptu bench, so I anchored kitchen cling film to the metal table with magnetic clamps. Most of the mess ended up on my hands, and the mixture contained polyurethane, so it was inconvenient. While lying in bed that evening, it occurred to me that the pieces would be flimsy, and pressing the keys in the center of the octave would deflect the platform. I will probably have to consider this the first layer and support it from below with a stronger piece of wood.
