I read in the IO expander's datasheet that the data lines were supposed to have pull-up resistors, so I added a couple of 10KΩ resistors. My demo program still did not recognize the chips. I probed the lines with a small LED, which did not reveal anything. I downloaded an I₂C scanner to the Arduino, but it did not detect anything. I unplugged the modules individually to remove the new resistors, but that did not help either. I removed them entirely, which did not change anything. I checked the microcontroller's board and discovered that my SDA and SCL wires were crossed. As soon as I corrected them, the scanner discovered both boards. I downloaded my demo program, which monitored the inputs on one board and blinked the outputs on the other, and both worked, although the LED was dimmer than I wanted.
