The next step in testing was to confirm that it would not irritate the skin. My wife made a thick paste of water and red cabbage extract (RCE), and we smeared some on our forearms. We covered our patches with kitchen cling film and secured them in place with medical tape. The RCE stayed on for a few hours while we ran errands.
She took her film off after two hours and wiped it away with a dry napkin. The stain was noticeable, but the skin was not irritated or tender.
I waited three hours and washed with soap and water. My arm was completely clean and unirritated. We showed that RCE was not a skin irritant after a few hours and left no visible residue.
