2026-04-14 (W) cyberlassChallengeCoin Concept and modeling

My wife asked people to make her something for her birthday. It could be naming a character after her in their current video game, or writing her into a story they were working on. I opted to create a coin honoring her. The front has her name, online handle, a double helix, and the periodic table entries for Carbon and Silicon. The back has the chemical symbol for caffeine, which matches the solo tattoo on her shoulder. I drew the graphics in QCAD and extruded them to make them pop up from the surface of a flat disc. I also created the ridges along the edge in OpenSCAD as half-cylinders, a little more fidget-worthy than small dimples you would find on a typical piece of currency.

The rest of the project will be about learning how to cast the coin in metal. My initial plan was to carve one face into graphite and melt metal into it, but it would be single-sided. I changed to the sand-casting method based on a 3D-printed coin. I ordered a two-part mold frame, sand, metal blanks, and a melting pot.
