2026-04-20 (M) Critical Affection: Atomic Blonde

Atomic Blonde should have been a good movie, and doubly so since it partially inspired Sarah's character, Luca, in the comic Noctiluca. The movie had some redeeming qualities, spot-on sets, brutal fights, top-notch actors, and a solid premise. The problems with the movie were that it was pure Hollywood, warts and all. The misogyny was dripping in nearly every scene, and that made it rotten from the inside. I appreciated that the movie made fights look like punches hurt, and kicks could incapacitate, but a couple of my co-hosts did not care for that grit. Fortunately, we were able to talk about how Noctiluca was written by a woman and illustrated by a woman, and how it avoided the Hollywood trappings.
