I bought a bunch of commercial earplugs in different styles and printed a bunch of the Loop-style stalks. I made SWAG bags with four regular earplug sets and a pair of my earplugs with S/M/L earbud covers. For fun, I added a PVC card that says, "I survived a talk by 24HourEngineer at Grindfest 2026, and all I got was some damn earplugs," positioned so it's visible through the bag.
I compiled notes for my Grindfest 2026 talk on earplugs, focusing on hearing perception, speakers, and music theory, and I plan to include demonstrations to make things memorable.
I designed a simple poster for my talk at Grindfest, but I made it single-color and entirely with lines so I could use my pen plotter/vinyl cutter to draw the sign on a piece of inexpensive 22" x 28" (56cm x 71cm) tagboard. I was delighted by the sign, considering it cost less than $1 USD.
My wife and I found a commercial gumball vending machine, and we both wanted to put stuff in it for Grindfest 2026. I had to drill out the lock and replace it with a printed topper, but security was never the goal. I assumed the machine worked with 1" spheres, but it was 1.25", so I ordered capsules that size and printed some plain spheres with "Grindfest 2026," as giveaways.
I wanted something innovative for the vending machine, and I drew on my compass-building experience. I made a printable device that sat in the half-clear balls and held a couple of magnets. When a nearby magnet moves, like the kind some grinders implant, the parts move without any visible contact. The whole thing could be added to a necklace with an eye-hook or carried in a pocket.
Alien (1979) is a classic horror movie, but is it science-fiction? We talked with our guest, Aaron Wroblewski, about this and other topics when he came by to talk about Enenra, his comic series. Aaron wanted to discuss Alien because it influenced his life and art.
