2026-06-28 (Su) EWC_Mobile Concept and sketch

Whenever someone asks about my music projects, I have to show them pictures or a video because I did not have a portable demonstration unit. The biggest problems were carrying a synthesizer and a speaker. The cleanest solution I could devise was a unit that connected to my phone, using a MIDI synth and the phone's speakers. If I wanted to get louder, I could connect the phone to an amplifier. I sketched a device that would hold to the back of my phone via the MagSafe ring. It had six encoders, two switches, some LEDs, and a screen. The device connects to the computer via USB-C, and the controller also supports Bluetooth. I did not intend this for wireless operation. Each encoder has one or two functions, and I can access the alternative function by holding the knob down.

The device will play a single melody track and the percussion channel. In case I use a synth that does not support percussion on channel 10, I will disable it by default. Even though it was being designed for a phone, I want it to be compatible with any MIDI synth. I plan to make a custom circuit board with a socket for an ESP32 demo board with an integrated screen. The whole look should be a bare-bones custom circuit with an afterthought to decoration and a focus on functionality.
