I have been mentally cataloging ideas for new electric knives, and it finally reached critical mass to the point where I could not concentrate on anything else. I wanted something low-maintenance that I could replicate quickly, and that was easy to operate. There have been at least two other grinders who made electric knives since mine, and they had things that I liked and disliked. Elliot Roth's version, which appeared at Open Sauce, had exposed aluminum, and these were the same knives that we used at Grindfest 2026. The knives were incredibly durable due to the aluminum plates, but they were responsible for some minor injuries. Open Sauce combatants used face protection and shields, so they were safe. I also disliked that the transformer felt underpowered and buzzed, whereas Satur9's knives snapped with electricity and stung when you got hit.
The design I was making was tubular, like the previous version, but it would be sealed against dust since the last two years of Grindfest featured a sand pit and every pushbutton experienced problems. This model would use more 3D-printed parts since my printers were capable of much stronger copies. The case was going to be a polycarbonate tube, which I discarded in the past because it was expensive, but I loved the clear handle look, and this time I am not asking anyone else to build them. The blade will be aluminum plates, like Elliot's, but they will have a plastic cover on the edges.
I am still debating the switches and internals. In the last model, I relied on scavenging transformers from inexpensive taser units because I wanted to ensure everyone used the same parts, but since I am in control of the supply, I bought raw units that I can test myself. I may go with a smaller battery since the 18650 cells lasted longer than necessary, and a small battery may fit in the shell better.
