2026-09-11 (F) Weekly Summary

I revised the internal switch mechanism by narrowing the wire-routing block and moving the zip-tie block back into place. I extended the low-voltage wiring groove, reduced the high-voltage wire diameter, and added a new variable for routing bare wires within shrink tube. I also added angled holes to the front peg and eliminated zip-tie fastening points to secure the wires, but I cannot test it yet.
Innards ready

I received the parts for the external switch component and replaced the aluminum spacers with a cut brass tube for 5mm-tall spacers. After soldering the switch to the brass segments and testing it successfully, I ran into an issue where sparks wanted to pass through the brass bolts on the underside of the interior switch component. The important thing was that the parts and circuit worked.

I was nervous about cutting my aluminum bar stock since metalworking is not my forte, and I worried about messing it up. After cutting a 45° section and rounding the edges with a hacksaw and metal rasp, I checked the fit against my printed blade sheath and marked the hole locations. The assembly went smoothly, and I only needed a few adjustments to make the internal switch and the tang mate up properly. When I tested the knife on my arm, it delivered a strong shock, which made me consider adding a voltage regulator.

To prevent sparking inside the handle, I moved the high-voltage wires from the central internal switch to a couple of new prongs on the outside of the blades. 
Three-pronged connector modeled

I printed a new tang and an internal switch, but they were too tight to fit. I updated the internal switch code so that, when I rendered it for subtraction from the tang, it included wiggle room. I printed a bladeless tang, and it fit the other piece smoothly.
Mating pieces

Amanda hosted our discussion of The Day After Tomorrow (2004). Fred deemed it trash, but I enjoyed it once I lowered the bar and classified it as disaster porn. We acknowledged that despite its flaws, the film started discussions about climate change more than twenty years ago.
