2016-05-30 (M) 2 Cyborgs and a Microphone

What should have been a brief recording session with co-host Tim Shank turned into an hour long session with less than a minute of recorded voice. This might have seemed like a waste but the result was a short commercial-length audio clip with a carefully, METICULOUSLY, worded script where Tim and I quickly explain who we are, what we do and what the podcast will be about. The amount of time spent recording was minimal, the most time was spent concocting the script. Another piece of time was spent deciding on a name for the show.

Teamspeak 3 was used to link Tim and I vocally and record and carry our pre-recording conversation. Capturing audio was simple and the resulting files were clear .wav files which were large uncompressed audio files but easily read by most programs.

Once the audio was recorded it was a simple matter to extract the short clips and arrange them. Music was added. The music files were from 0music, an AI generated album in the public domain. Music was suggested by Tim since the idea of AI generated music is definitely in the realm of what we plan to talk about on the show.

2016-05-29 (Su) 2 Cyborgs and a Microphone

Tim Shank of Twin Cities Plus and I have decided to try our hands, and vocal cords, at a podcast. Our first reason is to tell people all about what we think and feel and the second reason is that we think it will be fun. After a single day of tossing ideas around in my head I came up with a dozen show ideas.

...

The focus of the show is going to be biohacking. At least that’s where we’re starting. It is intended to be a casual chat between two people with a stake in the technology and fore-knowledge. It will give us a chance to talk about our ideas and maybe do some brainstorming. Another podcast in a similar vein is Future Grind, which currently focuses on interviewing big names in the transhumanist community. Our approach will be significantly more casual and not center on other people. Future Grind had four episodes when this was written and every one of them is worth listening to thoroughly.

Because of the audio book reading a recording space was created and equipment was ordered and arranged to work there. All the use made it a comfortable system that was easy to navigate. Many of the problems with the inexpensive equipment have been solved so hopefully podcasting can begin quickly.

To make the podcast more likely to succeed the format will be Tim and I communicating remotely. Making time to meet at the same location will likely dampen the likelihood of producing shows in a timely fashion. Teamspeak 3 is going to act as the bridge between us. While there is not a lot of flexibility in the software for controlling the sound it does the heavy work automatically. Level control is automatically performed and recording is a simple keystroke. The audio quality is sufficient for voice.

A Teamspeak server was set up by running the software on one of the Windows tablets which was originally intended to be a recording platform. Instructions were taken from a YouTube video and were fairly simple to follow. One problem was that any computer attached to my network refused to connect to the server. Part of the video instructions were to obtain the public IP of my household which was entered into the Teamspeak clients. This wouldn’t work between two computers on the same network. One option was to connect to a public network and communicate through that but that connection was unreliable where I live. The most reliable solution was to enter the local IP address, 10.0.0.189 in my case. This IP address belonged to the tablet computer running the server software. Once this was tried the signal didn’t leave the local network unless someone was remotely connected. Ping times between computers linked this way would be faster than connecting through the internet.

A trial session was performed between Tim and I. This took place before the server was set up and the lag was minimal even though the Teamspeak server was located several hundred miles away. Voice quality was good but some adjustment needed to be made with equipment. Recording was done only to prove it was possible and was not meant for release.

A show has been outlined and some of the mechanics of the show were discussed. Tim and I were very excited to start casting to everyone.

2016-05-28 (Sa) Charged: DesertIrish

Chapter 39 was recorded. This chapter marks the beginning of the third part of the story. So much was hinted at in the second part that there wasn’t a clean break where everything was neatly wrapped up before starting the third part. One advantage to long-form story telling was the freedom to have story arcs which meld with each other. Dawson’s story may not come to a close in this “book” but the end will tie up the loose strings in his story. That's the plan right now anyway.

2016-05-27 (F) Weekly Summary

Last week’s summary failed to include the Firefly Tattoo I had installed. Safety precautions were shown in the blog post so if you’re concerned for my safety, thank you and please read the full post if you continue to be concerned. I’ve had it installed more than a week now and healing has been perfect. The stitch was removed and a lot more light is visible. At first it was only visible in a completely dark room and it took time before my eyes could adjust. Now it is visible in a dark room, not pitch black, and when my eyes are completely adjusted the light cast can actually be seen reflected on nearby objects. Of course it isn’t bright enough to keep me awake but in the dark my hand is always visible to me.

The week was full of recording. Eleven chapters were recorded! That is definitely a record for me. With chapters released each day it’s almost like a radio serial. If you have enjoyed it this way I am sorry to report that the flow will be interrupted for a new project soon. I’ve been hinting at a new project and it won’t be officially released right away but there is definitely a new project on the horizon. This project is another one which involves the recording equipment.

Some of the new chapters have been very short. Some were so short that during the editing I combined them into a regular chapter. This didn’t affect the story and probably helped the flow. Even though some chapters have been short the time necessary to record hasn’t decreased much. It still takes roughly three times longer to record than the actual output. A couple seven minute chapters can take forty five minutes to record. And those forty five minutes are tough.

Equipment in the recording space has been getting upgrades for a while now. Most of them haven’t been worth mentioning like a new pop filter or mic stand but the microphone and USB adapter used for most of the book was replaced and sounded so close to the first one that it wasn’t worth mentioning. The new microphone isn’t as finicky when I turn my head so volume consistency isn’t as much of a problem. The recording should sound better without a change in my voice.

A fun trick was tried on the last chapter of part one. The majority of the chapter was text message conversation between two male characters. Until this point their voices were distinguished by cadence and subtle intonations. Instead of repeating this while the characters were not actually speaking to one another the character not in the room was filtered through a “TELEPHONE” software filter which stripped the sound of low tones and made it sound as though the audio was recorded through a telephone. The effect was good and can hopefully be utilized later.

2016-05-26 (Th) Charged: DesertIrish

Chapter 38 was recorded but with a different approach. It was a short chapter but the bulk of the chapter was a text message exchange between two male characters. To this point they had the same voice but different inflections. In this chapter they were communicating with a nonverbal medium. Their inflections stayed the same but a different filter was applied to the character whose text messages were being read by the main character. Instead of the standard reading a second track was added in the audio editor where the voice was modified to sound like it was coming through a telephone.

Two reasons for this change in technique was to experiment with filters in a logical place and to avoid having to read the text which designated whose message was being read. Alternatively it could have been read verbatim but each sentence would have started with “My phone” or “Numbers.” For those not following the story, Numbers is the pseudonym of the other character in the conversation.

2016-05-25 (W) Charged: DesertIrish

Two chapters has been a good pace and when the chapter were short it was easy to record them in a night. The last two chapters, 36 and 37, were not short chapters, they were average length for this book. Each chapter was over seven minutes long once recorded. It takes roughly three times longer to record and edit simultaneously than the finished product so fifteen minutes of finished audio takes approximately 45 minutes. That 45 minutes is not like lounging in a comfortable chair browsing 9gag. Most of the time I’m carefully controlling my breathing and deliberately speaking with all the emotion I can muster. Plus switching from one character’s voice to another takes a whole new level of concentration.

I hope I don’t come off as complaining, I’m not. Recording is rewarding because it is challenging and I’m happy with the result. Someday soon it might be fun to play the first chapter immediately after recording and reviewing a later chapter to try to detect all the things which have improved and still need improvement.

2016-05-24 (Tu) Charged: DesertIrish

Two chapters were recorded, chapters 34 and 35. Recording continues to improve and a groove has been found so hopefully it will be possible to step up to three chapters per day.

Currently the extra time each day has been used for other activities including the other voice project hinted at in previous blog posts and G+ posts. This project involves different technique and work since a second person is being recorded simultaneously. All the program familiarity and experience is paying off.

Please enjoy the latest chapters, soon the gears will shift to a new project.

2016-05-23 (M) Charged: DesertIrish

Another pair of short chapters was recorded. Chapters 32 and 33.

One problem while recording is loud keypresses. Standard keyboards are quiet compared to mechanical keyboards. Mechanical keyboards are usually used by gamers and high-traffic business computers which see a lot of abuse. Despite the relative quiet they can still be heard while recording. The easiest solution was a silicone keyboard, usually sold as waterproof or roll-up keyboards. They pretty inexpensive but difficult for typing because they don’t feel like a regular keyboard. The obvious advantage here is that they don’t use rigid plastic hinges for movement, just the flexing of a thin silicone sheet.

Desk space in the recording area has been limited and the height is uncomfortable for extended periods where it was necessary to resting hands on the keyboard and mouse area. A couple options are available if an upgrade happens. It’s possible to buy an adjustable keyboard platform but it must be very solid since some have cheap drawer slides which would be noisy. Another option is to build a cheaper version with angle iron and hinges which can be tightened quickly. The third option is to build another lower shelf.

2016-05-22 (Su) Charged: DesertIrish

Two more short chapters were recorded. Chapters 30 and 31 were recorded in another single session which took as long as some of the earlier chapters.

Equipment has been continuously upgraded. The microphone was switched at the end of one chapter without mentioning it in the book or the blog. Differences were so minor that it didn’t seem important. Sound insulation was added which may also be undetectable.

2016-05-21 (Sa) Charged: DesertIrish

Recent chapters have been short. Instead of recording three short chapters in a single day some chapters have been combined but sometime it only made sense to keep a chapter break even if the recording was a couple minutes long.

Chapters 28 and 29 were recorded. They were less than ten minutes each. A large percent of recording time has been setting up, launching programs and getting situated. Most recording sessions go until it becomes uncomfortable or ability falters.
