I stripped and tinned the wires that I previously connected to the LEDs. Tinned wires did not fray when I pushed them through the PCB pads, so there was less chance of getting a short later. I soldered the wires in place, then rested the board flat to bridge the connections between the wires and the resistors meticulously. The second octave was completed, so I put the IO expander demo boards back in their sockets and replaced the key covers.
