I added header pins to the new board, and it mostly fit the existing faceplate. The biggest problem was the USB-C port, which was taller than the previous board. I uploaded a USB↔MIDI example sketch after making some changes. I made it use pseudo-random notes instead of repeating the same note. I had to press the physical buttons on the demo board to reset because the device only acts as a MIDI device, so I cannot mount the board unless I drill holes for the switches. I was happy with the example, so I integrated the necessary parts into my code.
